What kind of recordings do you make?

We record a wide range of Audio applications, including Music, Voice overs and Audio books to Major and Independent companies and self funded projects

How long as the studio been operating?

The Offbeat Recording Studio has been established in Edinburgh in the Royal Mile since 1992.

How much does it cost to book the studio?

A single hour (up to 3 hours) costs £60per hour We can provide a 4 hour studio block of time for £200 and 8 hours costs £375. Thereafter its £40 per hour on any block bookings.

Do your provide an engineer?

Yes an engineer is included in our hourly rate

Can I bring my own producer to the studio or produce myself?

Yes no problem, we have a music production service but you can certainly bring your own producer or produce yourself if you prefer.

Do you accommodate bands?

Not in our High St Boutique studio which is suitable for Singers, Songwriters, Solo Artists and Lyricists and small groups. However we have arrangements with other studios if required.

Do you have instruments in the studio?

Yes we have a selection of Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Fender Jazz Bass, Roland Keyboards and an Electro / Acoustic Kit. We have a huge range of keyboard sounds, synths, percussion, drums, keyboards and piano and orchestral plugins

What does your recording set up consist of?

We have Logic Pro X 10.5 with a Mac Pro and Metric Halo Convertors, Yamaha DM2000 Mixer, Focal, Genelec with Sub Woofer and Nuemann Monitors.

Which plugins do you use?

A Full set of Logic Pro X, Waves Mercury Plugins, Metric Halo, Korg Legacy, Kontakt 8 with many Native Instruments, Spitfire Audio Drums, Percussion, Strings and Pianos.

What microphones do you have?

Neumann U87, Neumann KM 84's, AKG Solid Tube, set of 4 x AKG 3000, Coles Stereo Ribbon Mic, AKG 414, Rode NTK & Sennheiser MKH 416T Mics

Based on the Royal Mile, our boutique studios are BBC-approved and available to hire with engineer for any audio project. The Studios

Offbeat has two independent studio spaces with acoustically treated recording rooms. Both studios can be amalgamated for bigger projects.

We have a large range of instruments available for creating background music and bespoke sound design for radio, film and tv projects.

We have a comfortable producer seating and large monitoring screens

We adhere to BBC-approved technical standards

We have two purpose-built vocal booths for clear, controlled capture

Equipment

We utilise Industry-standard microphones (Neumann, AKG, Coles, Sennheiser)

Pro Tools & Logic Pro X DAW systems with an extensive collection of plug-ins for signal processing, sound effects and editing and mastering tools

We use Source-Connect, IPDTL and Zoom for remote sessions and can connect with most remote applications

Location & Accommodation

Situated on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, minutes from Waverley Station, Offbeat is right in the centre of Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile.

We have converted the entire top floor of a tenement building containing two seperate studios which can be connected for large recording projects.

On-site accommodation available for visiting producers, narrators and artists with stunning views over Calton Hill

Can I record music here?

Our day-to-day focus is spoken word, but you can hire the studio with an engineer for any audio project. We work mainly with solo artists and singer/songwriters. For full band sessions we’re happy to recommend colleagues locally.To record only, we charge per studio hour

Are you BBC-approved?

Yes, Offbeat is an approved BBC supplier.

Do you take remote clients?

Yes, we run Source-Connect and Zoom daily for remote direction. We can connect with you on IPDTL, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, Zencastr and Studio Session Pro.

Can I book the studio for just a few hours?

Yes. We offer flexible booking slots, whether you need a short voiceover session or a full day of audiobook recording.

Is the studio accessible for visitors?

The studios are on the top floor of our Royal Mile building. We’ll always help with access, but please get in touch in advance if you have specific mobility requirements so we can advise.

What’s included when I hire the studio with an engineer?

Yes and you can hire a room to record yourself if yu have yur own equipment

What if I’m not based in Edinburgh?

You can stay in our self-contained apartment next door to the studio, complete with its own acoustically designed booth and stunning rooftop views of thew old town. Remote recording options are also available.
