Talitha Mackenzie ‘Solas’ Album
World Music artist TALITHA MACKENZIE worked with Iain McKinna and Chris Birkett to produce her album Solas on World Music Network.
Iain started the five tracks he produced the on the album working with Talitha at his own studio before going to Edinburgh’s palladium Studio to record and mix the tracks. He played Bass & Guitar and Programmed drums on the album. Dave Haswell was brought in to add percussion and Mike Nolan played keyboards.
Talitha, originally from New York where she studied ethnic music, learned Gaelic and she moved to Scotland to research waulking songs from the Western Isles which she morphed into other more contemporary music styles. Iain did his own arrangement of Sheatdach Cailleach which was described by Q magazine in a four star review as ” A high risk leap into Gaelic ragga”.
The album reached no3 in the US World Music charts and no 12 in the European charts. Iain subsequently toured with the band as guitarist and MD playing gigs at The Melk Weg (Amsterdam) Womad Festival in England, Womex in Berlin, Barrowlands, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and many major UK venues as well as The Waterfront in Toronto.
Tracks from the album also feature on the following CDs – Roots Reels and Rhythms (Nascente Records) – Global Partnership 2 (World Music Network) and One Voice (World Music Network).
Talitha was a co-founder of the Band Mouth Music with Martin Swan who topped the USA World Music charts prior to the release of this album.
