The Royal Scots Dragoons ‘Spirit Of The Glen’ Albums
In 2008 Iain recorded the first SPIRIT OF THE GLEN album for producer Jon Cohen for UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, which achieved a Xmas no1 in the UK Classic FM charts and no 12 in the UK album charts.
More recently SPIRIT OF THE GLEN/JOURNEY – won the 2009 Classical Brit album of the year award. A third album THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION for Decca Records was released in February 2010.
The albums were recorded on the Offbeat Studio G5 Computer using our Metric Halo convertors by Iain at Heartbeat Studios just outside Edinburgh, working with world famous classical cross-over producer Jon Cohen and with the expert help of Heartbeat’s Dave Valentine and Ed Logan.
We decided to record the drones seperately as this had worked well on the three albums I made with piper Jimi McRae. It made changing key much easier as we could just remove drones when the music changed from the key of A.
Jon created amazing arrangements and despite having recorded in Prague with the Czech Film orchestra for the album earlier in the process, we worked with Jons initial midi parts for the recordings. We worked using Interleaved stereo files using 2 Nuemann U87s for the entire Pipe recordings. On the first album we used a pair of Rode mics too and recorded each mic on a seperate track which made Jon’s editing job of four tracks per take a bit unwieldy as a result. The guys used pipes in concert pitch making Jon’s job easier still when it comes to pitching them against the orchestra.
“It was great that we stayed at No1 in the Classics for 10 weeks and that the Spirit Of The Glen album has been received with great enthusiasm, and then the Brit Award with Journey … Thanks for all your great work on the album..yours aye”.
