"This was a truly mega project which was produced
in the Algarve. Portugal in 2002. The show was commissioned
by Sheik Bin and his specially invited audience of
the Algarve's rich and famous was estimated at 1500,
at least million and some billionaires. The site was
the Shieks world famous golf course in Alamancil on
the coast and the 12th hole had been virtually demolished
to create the set. Included was a huge air conditioed
marquee which was to host a dinner for the guests
prior to the show starting. The theatrical performance
art event was specially written by Judite DaSilva
for the occassion and was to be performed on 4 stages
simultaneously, each representing an element. Fire,
Water, Air and Earth.
150
performers and technicians were flown in from all
over the World for the show from as far away as Brazil.
As the producer of the show Beau McClellan, an old
friend and musical collaborator and trainee engineer
from my days at Edinburgh's Sonic Studios in the 80's,
decided that hiring a studio for the music wouldn't
really work as a lot of it would have to be composed
along with the choreographers developing their acts,
so I had a budget to buy a recording system based
around my own Logic Audio system. Beau then set about
building a small self contained studio near his home
in Espargal in the Algarve especially for the show.
Before we even started on the music the gear was bought
and shipped out from Scotland, and 2 months prior
to rehearsals we set up the studio. This left little
room for error, technical support in the Algarve was
non existent so we had to get it right first time.
At the time I was touring as Bass player with The
Jimi McRae Band so I never saw home much around that
period. We gave ourselves just two weeks prior to
the show to create 40 minutes of music , as it was
a performance art production it relied on the music
and visuals to make the show work. Prior to going
out after the studio was built I spent an entire week
listening to samples and selecting at least 5 times
more than I needed for the production to make sure
I had enough sounds to work with.
