Clients – Tony Gately
I was approached in early September 2012 by Tony’s wife Claire who asked us to produce this song for the upcoming third anniversary of Tony’s brother Stephen Gately’s death on October 10th. The track was released on Offbeat on 8th October 2012 and immediately charted at no 39 on Amazon’s best seller Pop chart and no 14 on the Indie/Alternative chart.
I worked from a demo of the track initially but after discussion with the writers, Tony and songwriter Kevin Pallot, decided to abandon the programmed approach of the demo and reworked the music from scratch using Acoustic Guitars to base the backing on. We then incorporated the piano from the initial demo although I changed the chord structure to fit in with the guitars.
After completing the backing track I got Tony into the studio to lay down a demo of his voice to map out the general direction of the song which eh then took away to work on for a few days before coming back to the studio to lay down the actual vocal using a Neumann U89 microphone.
The track has been incredibly well received by Tony’ and Stephen’s fans and is now available on all good online music stores.
Have a listen to the track and buy if you like it. Some of the proceeds for the song will go to the charity CRY. Cardiac Risk in the Young so please don’t nick it!!
