by musician/producer Iain McKinna and the company has since
produced over 50 albums at his Royal Mile studio for a huge
range of artists in a staggering range of styles...

As a multi-instrumentalist Iain's productions have been in
demand for singers + songwriters who require musical accompaniment.
Recordings he has been involved in have achieved International
success and recognition since he started out in the business
as a sound engineer and session musician in 1977. He recorded
the first demos for New Wave acts The Scars and TV21 in the
late 70's. As a songwriter in the early 80's he was signed
to Simon Cowell's E+S music in London. In the Eighties he
worked as head engineer at Edinburgh's Planet and Palladium
Studios working with many well known acts including pre Shamen
'Alone Again Or' and The Bay City Rollers. In the mid to late
Eighties he started Edinburgh's Midi/Analogue based Sonic
Studios working with many major and Indie labels. With over
30 years in the music business, Iain has pro experience of
all recording mediums from Analogue to the early days of Midi
based studios through to todays Digital formats.
The first album he worked on as a producer was for Postcard
Records with the band Nectarine No9 in 1993. The band and
the album achieved cult status when they became NME band of
the year. His first taste of chart success was with an album
he produced for New Yorker Talitha MacKenzie entitled Solas
in the mid 90s. The album reached no3 in the US and no 12
in the European World music charts. In August 2007 an album
Iain recorded for Universal Records entitled Spirit Of The
Glen with producer Jon Cohen, made Xmas no1 in the UK Classical
charts and no 11 in the UK album charts and stayed at the
top for 10 weeks into February this year. Earlier in 2007
a track Iain wrote and produced entitled Searching made the
No1 spot on iCompositions.com, a music site run by Apple Mac.
He is also a gigging musician, playing at World famous venues
including T-In The Park fro 4 years running from 2001, Glasgow
Royal Concert hall, Barrowlands, Amsterdams Melk Veg (Milky
Way), Hollands Terschelling Island Festival, Beijing Spring
Festival and the Toronto Waterfront to name but a few. As
a composer he has worked for BBC, Channel 4 and numerous ad
agencies. He co-wrote music for the Algarve's biggest ever
theatrical performance event Fulgor in 2002. He designed and
built a Logic based studio in Portugal especially for the
event.
Iain is currently writing music with his musical partner,
electric violinist and vocalist Kirsty and in his spare time
he enjoys filming and editing music videos.
PAUL McKINNA
In 2000 Iain's
son Paul began working at the studio following a record deal
Paul signed with the Drum n'Bass label Reign Of Sound. Paul
was brought up around the music business since moving to Scotland
from Canada in his early teens and has a strong interest in
programming as well as a musical background playing guitar
and brass. Paul handles most of the dance based projects recorded
at Offbeat, including his own project with rapper Profisee
called Great Ezcape, with whom Paul produced 2 successful
hip hop EP's over the past two years. The band achieved airplay
and live sessions on BBC Radio1 , Radio Scotland, 1xtra +
Kiss Fm. He recently wrote music for the 20th century Fox
movie trailer Meet The Spartans. Outside of music
Paul is an avid film buff and skateboarder.

NIK PAGET-TOMLINSON
Recently
musician and producer Nik Paget Tomlinson has recently joined
the Offbeat production team. As a producer, engineer and musician
Nik has worked with a number of artists in a wide variety
of styles. With record releases in Europe and America and
production credits including Niki King, Puchi,
3 Bag Brew and Bogus, Nik has many years
of studio experience on both sides of the microphone. Nik
has also created a number of soundtracks for theatre productions
and short films, including the BAFTA Scotland nominated Plastering
The Cracks. In the last year Nik has collaborated with
Performance Poet Anita Govan on her 2007 Edinburgh Festival
Fringe Show Unpicked Fruit, completed work on the
album Growing Up by New York Jazz Singer Jess Abrams,
and is currently putting the finishing touches on the debut
Album Leit-Motif Man by singer songwriter Mike Kearney.
Now with
three highly experienced musician/producers in the company
crossing over different genres, Offbeat continues to offer
a vast experience to any artist who makes the choice to come
to the Offbeat studio to make pro recordings.
